How to Appreciate Diverse People During the Holidays
How to Appreciate Diverse People During the HolidaysHow to Appreciate Diverse People During the HolidaysGuess whos not celebrating Christmas this year? Millions of people all over the United States. Thats right. Tens of millions of Americans dont celebrate Christmas religiously, either as followers of non-Christian religions (Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and Jews- among others) or as individuals with no religious affiliation, possibly atheists or agnostics. Because many stores tap into the cash value of Christmas with their plethora of Santas, ornaments, and Christmas fanfare at your nearby mall, you can easily overlook the depth of the diversity present in America during this holiday season. In reality, many different events, both spiritual, religious, and tradition-based, are celebrated in many different ways during these times. Building Awareness of Diversity and Create an Inclusive Holiday Environment Acting inclusively used to mean sending out politically correct Happy Holida ys greeting cards and changing Christmas schreibstube parties to holiday parties. Today, celebrating inclusiveness and diversity is about more than just changing labels and titles. Celebrating diversity and inclusiveness is about using the holiday celebration time with friends and family to build understanding and awareness of the traditions and beliefs of others. Below are some noteworthy approaches. Learn About Other Religious or Holiday Celebrations Carve out some time from online shopping or a holiday TV show to learn about another cultures celebrations during this time. Watch a TV special about other celebrations, do a Google search on a holiday, or check out books at your local bookstore while gift shopping.Share your learning with others, and use it as a chance to expand the conversation at parties and at the dinner table. Make No Expectations Realize that people celebrate a variety of holidays during this time of year, and some people choose to celebrate none. Be respectful of these differences by taking an interest in other peoples traditions and making them feel welcome.Dont be afraid to ask people what holidays they celebrate. You can also find out what they do during this time of the year that is special. Let it be an opportunity to learn about different cultures and religions and the traditions that accompany them. Mark Your Calendar and Your Address Book If the calendar you use does not list holidays like Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Ramadan, and Diwali, find out the dates and record them as reminders. Many programs like Microsoft Outlook allow users to add calendar dates for celebrations from different parts of the world automatically, making this task quick and effortless. Take a few minutes to mark your address book with the holidays that people celebrate. When writing holiday cards, recognize their holiday, and include a short handwritten note acknowledging their celebration. A Note for Employers Want to become more inclusive so that your employees feel included and respected in your workplace? You can do much in your workplace to reinforce the fact that all voices are welcome and have an impact on decisions and plans. Make sure that your employees understand that you believe that divergent voices make for a better, more productive, beneficial work environment. Below are several extra things employers can do to make their workplaces more inclusive during the holidays Make sure that your holiday party isnt a Christmas party in disguise. Make the decorations and food general and not specific to any religion.Consider having a New Years party instead of a holiday party. This type of party can get everyone on mainboard with the companys mission and vision for the New Year. Some companies elect to skip holiday parties and hold a party during the companys birthday month or during a less busy time of the year so that more employees and their spouses and partners are able to attend. Post your holiday greetings on your webpage and intr anet for many religious holidays.Practice respect for these special dates and plan events and meetings around various religious holidays. Dont serve a holiday luncheon on the day when some employees may be fasting for Ramadan. Serve vegetarian options at the company hot dog lunch and for that matter, whenever the company orders and serves food. You can the following as well Display a multi-cultural calendar to help all employees stay aware of important cultural events for the rest of the year.Treat the needs of different employees about religious or holiday celebrations with flexibility. Consider offering floating holidays as part of your paid holiday schedule.Encourage employees to share their celebrations through stories, decorations, and foods that they can bring to their workplace. In one workplace, to celebrate his Polish heritage, an employee brings Paczkis to work on Fat Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras, the day to indulge before Lent begins. - Simma is a Diversity and Inclusion/Culture Change Consultant. Wisdom on How and When to Hire Intuits Tips for Successful Small Business Hiring
Wisdom on How and When to Hire Intuits Tips for Successful Small Business HiringWisdom on How and When to Hire Intuits Tips for Successful Small Business HiringIf each of the small businesses in the U.S. hired just one mora employee, 4.2 million jobs would be created. Brad Smith, CEO of Intuit, opened QBConnect with this provocative statement. QBConnect is Intuits annual user conference, chartered with connecting small businesses to one another and helping each other grow. The importance of employees was acknowledged several times in the conference this month. Entrepreneurs can only get so far on their own. Their connection to current and future employees is a key ingredient in their success. So how do small businesses attract and hire the employees that can make their venture a success?Gary Swart, a presenter at QBConnect and former CEO of ODesk, recommends that hiring managers focus on three thingsMotivationSkills ExperienceWhile skills are important, Swart has found motivation to be the most essential ingredient, because you can teach skills and knowledge, and experience builds over time, but motivation and personal characteristics are innate. As Swart said, You can teach a chicken to climb a tree, but its better to hire a squirrel in the first place. Most frequently when an employee didnt work out at his firm, it came down to a lack of motivationeither the motivation to learn new skills or to adjust detrimental behaviors. Many small businesses are hiring young employees, who dont have a track record of experience. In this instance, one QBConnect panel participant recommended probing for passion saying, If the candidate is passionate about what you do, that can fuel into skill-building and motivation to learn the job quickly. When is the right time to hire? Jessica Alba of The Honest Company said, Youll know when its time to hire while working until 11 p.m. at night is exciting for the first few months, after a while you start to notice the wear and tear on y ourself and other team members. You then know its time to bring in some additional employees to handle the workload and make sure people can spend some time with their families. While employees can help lighten your load, they do also require payroll processes and compliance to employment laws. An abundance of resources on hiring and managing employees from Intuit can be found here.As QBConnect closed, Sekou Andrews, a popular motivational speaker and entrepreneur, reminded the audience of small businesses None of us have to be a self-made success alone. When you are ready to hire, you are not alone in that process either. The Secret to Being Confident (Without Being Arrogant)
The Secret to Being Confident (Without Being Arrogant) The Secret to Being Confident (Without Being Arrogant) Arrogance. Itâs the thing that separates the can-dos from the can-do-way-better-singlehandedly-with-my-eyes-closeds, and itâs the quality that rubs you up the wrong way faster than an amorous Edward Scissorhands. Common perception is that thereâs a fine line between being confident and being arrogant, but in fact the gap between them is as wide as the Grand Canyon. Iâm keen for you to walk on the right side of that gap, so here are some simple ideas to help that along. You Donât Need to Fake It Fake it âtil you make it, they tell us, and I couldnât disagree more. People who are trying hard to come across as confident, for example, can mistakenly behave arrogantly simply because they havenât figured out what real confidence is or what it means to them. Theyâll talk over someone in a meeting, because thatâs what they think confident people do. Theyâll voice an opinion without thinking about its impact, because they think confident people make themselves heard. And theyâll steamroll their view forward, because confident people stick to their guns. Thatâs BS, of course. Pretending to be confident sees you trying to live up to a heap of half-brained notions of what confidence might be, without ever asking yourself what real, natural confidence looks like for you. You donât need to fake confidence, you already have it. Itâs there in the times when youâre at your best, the times when youâve felt most like you, and the times when you felt like everything was flowing. Get to know what that feels like, and youâll be good to go. You Donât Have to Be the Best I have a confession to make. There have been times when someoneâs screwed up or dropped the ball when Iâve been known to say, âYet another reason why I should run everything.â The thought that I could have done it better, faster, or with less of the smelly stuff hitting the fan led me to a place of hubris, where I elevated myself to a place of peerless effectiveness and achievement. Hereâs the thing, though: Iâm good, but Iâm not that good, and the simple acknowledgment that other people are way better than me is a strikingly important one. There will always be someone whoâs more experienced than you or more naturally talented than you, but hereâs the thing that the arrogant folk donât get: In no way does that fact diminish your experience, your talents, and your value. Confident people, on the other hand, are always be ready to see the best in others, and know that doing so isnât a judgement about them. You Donât Need to Hide Being really seen is a thought that strikes terror into many of us, and we build walls to avoid being vulnerable and to protect ourselves. The arrogant decorate those walls and use bluff and bluster to try to persuade people that how those walls are painted are who they really are. They prefer to pull the wool over peopleâs eyes rather than own up to a mistake, they tell stories and point fingers to paper over their own cracks, and they are happy to dodge responsibility until itâs time to claim a victory. This bluff and bluster is nothing more than hiding behind an edifice of effectiveness out of fear that theyâll be truly seen. In this way, itâs sometimes the people with the highest opinion of themselves are often the ones with the lowest self-esteem. So perhaps itâs no surprise that confidence is the foundation that makes it okay to be vulnerable. Itâs the layer of self-trust that allows you to take a few bricks out of that wall and know youâll be okay, to really show up and to show others who you are. Real, natural confidence is trust rather than second-guessing. Itâs congruity rather than compartmentalization. Itâs ease rather than resistance. Arrogance and confidence are worlds apart. Make sure you know the difference. Photo of confident man courtesy of Shutterstock.

10 worst fictional internships of all time
10 worst fictional internships of all time 10 worst fictional internships of all time Hollywood seems to be obsessed with interns lately! From 2015âs Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro comedy The Intern about a baby boomer starting over in a new career to TV shows like Jane By Design and The Hills showing what its like working in the fashion industry, viewers love watching a plucky newcomer trying to take their first steps up the corporate ladder. Yet, while lots of these fictional internships are shown as fast-paced and glamorous, others are filled with bad bosses, crazy hours, and dangerous job duties. The difference between a good and bad internship carry over to real-life too. While many internships offer valuable first-hand experience getting to know an industry, there are just as many who treat interns as nothing more than unpaid assistants or secretaries. But as much as you may hate spending hours in the mail run or going on constant coffee-runs for youâre coworkers, at lease you can be thankful youâre not interning at any of these offices! From obnoxious man agers to life-threatening demands, hereâs our list of the worst fictional internships that arenât worth the spot on your resume.1. Legally BlondePositive, determined, and creative, Elle Woods has all the traits a student needs to thrive in the ambitious atmosphere of Harvard Law School. Yet even after studying for months to master the LSTAT and beating out her fellow classmates to earn one of the coveted internships at her Professorâs firm, Elleâs repeatedly demeaned and underestimated by everyone around her for her typical âsorority girlâ appearance. Even after gathering a key alibi for the case, Elleâs devastated by the inappropriate behavior of her teacher and boss Professor Callahan who hits on her in his office and says he only hired her for her looks. Even with Callahanâs threats to destroy her entire law career, Elle stood her ground and proved herself during the final trial. What, like itâs hard?2. How to Get Away With MurderYou know youâre in over your h ead when your boss asks you to kill for her. ABCâs suspenseful Shonda Rimes hit How to Get Away With Murder focuses on the life of cut throat law professor and criminal attorney Annalise Keating and the five competitive students she selects to intern with her firm and assist with real-life cases. But after two mysterious murders strike their sleepy college town, the students soon find themselves at the center of a dangerous cover-up and suddenly find that they might be the ones on trial.3. Buffy the Vampire SlayerAnd speaking of How to Get Away with Murder⦠Before he was Annaliseâs go-to hitman/paralegal on the ABC drama, actor Charlie Weber played another down-on-his luck assistant as medical intern Ben on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On top of the regular demands of being a medical student in a town where people are constantly being injured by demons, poor Ben spent the majority of his life as a host for evil God Glory, causing him to experience constant fits of memory loss and paranoia. Also while weâre on the topic being a Slayer is probably the worst unpaid internship in history. I mean for all the times Buffy saved the world from unspeakable evil youâd think the Watcherâs Council would at least offer her a stipendâ¦4. 30 RockDespite his perpetually cheerful outlook, 30 Rockâs Kenneth has it pretty rough. Even though heâs the longest-lasting employee in the NBC office, Kenneth never advances beyond his role as a page/ office whipping boy. Even after he learns multiple languages and saves the studio from countless disasters , Kenneth is stuck plunging toilets and fetching coffee. As his boss Jack letâs him know, heâs still only worth about âseven dollars.â5. ScrubsFollowing the hectic antics of new doctorâs attempting to navigate life during their first years out of medical school, Scrubs turned tragedy into comedy by having best buds J.D. and Turk attempt to provide treatment while living up to the cost-cutting, strict demands of the bitter Dr. Cox who views all his students as â murderers and assassinsâ intentionally trying to kill the patients theyâre treating. In 2009, the younger cast members even got their own spin off web series appropriately titled Scrubs: Interns which followed former prodigy Sunny and six of her classmates as they attempting to navigate orientation and meet the insane requests of the doctors, nurses, receptionists, and janitors.6. One Tree HillWBâs smash soap One Tree Hill definitely gave its preteen audience some unrealistic expectations for their first pos t-high school careers. But while most of the Tree Hill High grads were off being NBA players, millionaire fashion designers, and international rock stars all before the age of 24, moody cheerleader Peyton Sawyer wasnât quite so lucky. After moving across the country to intern at a Hollywood Record Label, Peyton spends more than a year fetching coffee for cruel executives who frequently remind her that sheâs âthe assistant to the assistant.â Despite her passion for music, Peytonâs recording suggestions are constantly ignored and sheâs even pressured by her smarmy boss to âundo a button on her blouseâ in order to allowed into an important brainstorm session.7. The InternIn the world of fictional internships, no industry is more brutal and demanding than high fashion. Six years before Meryl Streep shamed all our taste in sweaters in The Devil Wears Prada, Joan Rivers played the part of a vicious fashion magazine editor in the rom-com The Intern. But while Merylâs ice queen character eventually softens by the end of the film, Rivers abuse of poor employees relentless. From granting a new mother a single day of maternity to leave to putting the models on a diet of âtwo apples per day,â this job is anything but glamorous.8. Gilmore GirlsA peace offering from her boyfriendâs newspaper magnate father after being told she âwasnât good enoughâ to marry into the Huntzberger family, Rory Gilmoreâs internship at the Stanford Eagle Gazette was cursed from the start. Despite running through the news room passing out copies and trailing senior reporters, her best efforts just werenât enough for Mitchum and after only two weeks in the role he sat her down and delivered the devastating blow that Rory just didnât have what it takes to make it in journalism. While, Roryâs reaction to this critique was definitely overdramatic (aka stealing a yacht and dropping out of Yale) Mitchum was way too judgmental to ever be her mentor in the first place .9. Greyâs AnatomyGreyâs Anatomy, the incredibly long-running primetime medical soap has spent 14 seasons chronicling the personal and professional lives of a group of first-year medical interns and residency surgeons at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital. These interns are under constant stress between the frequent backlash and competition from their superiors and having to regularly perform risky, fact-paced operations at a momentâs notice. With all the backstabbing, coworker romances, and an alarming number of life-threatening illnesses doctors, even the benefit of getting to stare at McDreamy all day isnât worth all the drama.10. Welcome to Night ValeIf thereâs one lesson listeners can learn from supernatural comedy podcast Welcome to Night Vale, itâs that radio is a strange and dangerous business. With an unofficial death toll of 16 (although 3 are technically just missing) the rate of turnover for Night Vale Community Radio is higher than the giant, translucent-s kinned worms staking out the community college. While Night Valeâs internship program does offer exciting real-world broadcasting experiences including attending press conferences, investigative reporting, singing sea shanty to ants, and organizing tape archives, the gruesome risks arenât worth the trouble. Even if you manage to ignore the shockingly high mortality rate you may end up like Intern Maureen and be forced to edit Cecilâs Jaws fan fiction. Truly, a fate worse than death. This article was originally posted on Kununu.com.

Another Master of Flight
Another Master of Flight Another Master of Flight Another Master of Flight Flight control of small, unpiloted air vehicles, especially, in bad weather, is a goal of Sridhar Ravi of Harvard University. Ravi has studied bumblebees because, although they are very small, their flight remains stable in wind-induced turbulence. Tiny mechanical drones havent yet advanced to that stage. Ravi has now turned his attention to another small, expert flier, the hummingbird. Ravi, a post-doctoral fellow with an aerospace degree, works in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology in the Combes Lab at Harvards Concord Field Station. He and his team of researchers, working with Stacy Combes, the labs principal investigator, conducted intensive research to observe what the bumblebee does to keep itself steady in the air when the wind blows. The study concluded that, while bumblebees have learned to fly stably in turbulence, they still experienced significant translational and rotational fluctuations as compared to flight in smooth flow. The new study was conducted through collaborations between scientists at RMIT University in Australia and at Harvard. Its observations include the hummingbirds use of their tails to help maintain stability. Schematic showing the points digitized on the hummingbird: markers applied to the bird (red points), and biological landmarks (blue points). Image: Harvard.edu The birds are excellent flyers, able to contend with the challenges posed by adverse winds in the environment. Bees and hummingbirds are both capable of hovering in unsteady winds. The study presented hummingbirds with smooth winds and highly turbulent winds and assessed the head, body, and tail kinematics of the birds. Ravi said that the hummingbirds maintained incredibly stable head position (moving less than 500 micrometers even when the wind was gusting). The birds also displayed very high flexibility in their wing kinematics and could change the parameters of their flapping cycle independently for each wing. According to the study, the left wing might do something completely different from the right wing. On average, the birds increased their flapping frequency and flapping amplitude, something they do when flying at high speeds. The study was able to take drag measurements on the bodies of the hummingbirds and found that in order to hover in turbulence the birds traded off flight efficiency for stability. They fanned their tails, an action that increased drag, but also gave them additional stability in flight. A video taken for the study shows the birds powering their way through the turbulence. When they fan out their tails, they can also to rotate them to arrest rapid disturbances. On average the birds also maintained a higher tail fan angle in turbulent winds that increased their stability. Ravi said that the complex movements and orchestrations of the tail kinematics allow the hummingbird to successfully maintain stable flight in conditions where man-made aircraft would struggle to say aloft. The wing movements were just too complex to mimic or interpret as of now. Ravi said that his teams research has enhanced their understanding of animal flight. He said some of their observations may be transferred to the design of unmanned aerial vehicles, perhaps by developing a mechanical tail, for example, that can serve the same purpose as that observed on hummingbirds. For Further Discussion Ravi has studied bumblebees because, although they are very small, their flight remains stable in wind-induced turbulence. Tiny mechanical drones havenât yet advanced to that stage.

Build Your TV News Ratings With Topical Promotion
Build Your TV News Ratings With Topical Promotion Build Your TV News Ratings With Topical Promotion Topical news promotion is one of the 6 key forms of media advertising. Yet when it comes to using topical promotion to drive an audience toward watching a TV newscast, its a tool thats often squandered. By using topical promotion effectively, you can see results for your newscast in the Nielsen ratings. The Basics of Topical Promotion Topical promotion for a newscast is simple. You highlight the stories you think are the most attention-grabbing in order to send viewers to that evenings newscast. Too often, topical promotion is written as an afterthought. This is one example of poorly-written topical promotion: Tonight on Action News 4, the city council meets to discuss the issues. Well have a full report. Also, well explain changes in federal law that will affect how taxpayers should file their income taxes. Sonny Snow has weather and Jock Champion the sports. Thats tonight on Action News 4. There are several reasons this is bad topical promotion. First, the promo doesnt state whats in it for the viewer to watch. Will she save money, be smarter, better looking? All the promo did was list a couple of stories and state that the weatherman will have weather and the sports guy will have sports. Heres one way to make it better: Tonight at 11 on Action News 4, the city council wants to change the way your garbage is collected. Will your trash pile up if you only get service once a week? Also, dont miss income tax filing tips. The law is now different in the way you should file. Plus, will the weekend be a washout? Sonny Snow will show you. And catch a grand-slam home run from Jock Champion. Only on Action News 4 at 11. This second example highlights the viewer benefits while dropping meaningless phrases like well have a full report. Because topical promotion runs :10 to :30 on air, every word must count. The second example requires the promo writer to know details about the story. That extra effort will make the topical promotion cut through the clutter of a commercial break to grab viewers and send them to the newscast. Also, notice the reference to you in the second example versus the well in the first. Writing you is more direct. Why Topical Promotion Is Important Topical promotion isnt Shakespeare. Thats the role of image promotion. But it provides short bursts of one-night-only advertising that can make a difference in the ratings, especially for stations that are not market leaders. Thats because a market-leading station already has a built-in core of viewers who will tune in, regardless of content. But that core viewer might be convinced to switch to the #2 or #3 rated station if theres a compelling reason to do so. The reason wont be because of a sudden shift in allegiance to a different news team. It will simply be because he was lured into wanting to watch a story that interests him. True, that great story will air tonight at 11 and then be history. But you got that one viewer to sample your news tonight, and tomorrow night, youll create another great topical promotion to entice someone else. Do it enough times and youve started a trend that will show up in the ratings. What to Tease A routine city council meeting that every TV station covered might be your lead story, but it shouldnt automatically earn a spot in that evenings topical promotion. If its on every station, then a viewer doesnt have a good reason to watch your stations coverage. If its a routine meeting, then the story isnt special enough to make it a must-see. Look for the stories with the most viewer benefit. That could be a story on a new way to treat cancer or a better way to drive into downtown tomorrow morning. Stories that help people are tailor-made for topical promotion. Next, look for a compelling video. Some producers call it eye candy. A raging wildfire, interstate pileup or baby otters are simply good visuals that viewers will remember after the promo is over. Also, consider that evenings audience demographics. If your topical promotion is running during a football game or during the Tony Awards, that should be reflected in the stories you choose and how you write the script. Male and female viewers respond differently to what you say and what you show. Finally, remember to state the time and place a lot. Tonight or Tonight at 11 isnt enough. Try to say Tonight at 11 on Action News 4 two to three times in your promo. It sounds like overkill, but you are competing with everything else in a viewers living room in order to make the sale. Topical promotion isnt taught in a college journalism class. A professor would say thats because its not journalism at all, but advertising. While thats true, any news producer and other news writers can easily boost their ratings and their careers by mastering the simple steps in selling a TV newscast.

What IT Wont Tell You About Workplace Security
What IT Won't Tell You About Workplace Security What IT Won't Tell You About Workplace Security From elections being hacked to a rogue ransomware that managed to infect hundreds of thousands of computers across 150 countries in a matter of days, itâs hard to tune into the news these days without hearing about some form of hacking or security issue. As we come to rely on the internet for more - for commerce, politics, and social activities - you can be assured that the bad guys will keep getting sophisticated in their attempts to compromise your security. Not that things arenât bad already - they are (as we revealed on TheBestVPN , there were 4,100 security breaches, resulting in 4.2 billion stolen and exposed personal records, in 2016 alone). Unfortunately, the role employees play in facilitating these security issues is not small - the renowned eBay hack in which hackers stole data of 145 million eBay users was as a result of three key eBay employees being compromised, and the recent WannaCry malware that is spreading in unprecedented proportions started with just one person on a network opening the wrong attachment, which then automatically spreads to all computers on a network. IT would really love for you to play a more active role in security. They really want you to know these facts, but they donât know how to tell you: 1. Even With Your Antivirus and a Secure Password Manager, You Can Still be Hacked To the average web user, once you have a very reliable antivirus application and a good password manager, nothing could go wrong. After all, the antivirus automatically screens everything that goes through your computer and the password manager automatically generate passwords - using a combination of strange characters - that you couldnât have imagined in a million years. IT would really like you to know that this does not make your security sacrosanct . In fact, the way things are setup to day, most malware and exploits are delivered through the web and email, and your firewall already allows these two mediums (otherwise you wonât really be able to use the internet!). Experts have also found that most password managers are not as secure as many will expect them to be. In fact, the team at TeamSIK analyzed all of the top password managers and made the following conclusion: â The overall results were extremely worrying and revealed that password manager applications, despite their claims, do not provide enough protection mechanisms for the stored passwords and credentials. Instead, they abuse the usersâ confidence and expose them to high risks. â This doesnât mean you shouldnât use an antivirus and a password manager. You should, because not using them could be much more dangerous. However, you should use them alongside other security measures. 2. It Sucks to Update Your Device, but Itâs One of the Most Effective Forms of Protection Against Being Hacked The most recent ransomware making the rounds now is WannaCry, a ransomware that took down hundreds of thousands of computers in 150 countries in a matter of days: the ransomware works by searching for and encrypting 176 different file types and asking users to pay $300 to have their files decrypted. If payment isnât made within three days, the amount requested will be doubled. If payment is not made within seven days, the files will be deleted. Whatâs interesting about WannaCry and many other types of ransomware is how they spread: WannaCry spreads by exploiting a critical vulnerability in Windows computers; it then uses this vulnerability to spread across computers on the same network - in other words, youâre likely to be infected once a computer on your organization network is infected. The interesting fact about WannaCry, as well as most other forms of malware, is that they usually target weak and vulnerable computers, and they are most effective if you havenât updated your computer in a long time. Microsoft already released a fix to the vulnerability the WannaCry ransomware exploited two months before the ransomware came out, yet hundreds of thousands of people were affected because they havenât updated their computer. IT wants you to know that as much as you hate to update your computer, it will really save you and them a lot of worries and money. 3. Backups are Boring, Yes, But You Canât Live Without Them The biggest threat to any organization is data loss, and IT just canât wait to emphasize this enough to you. When you really think about it, the majority of the exploits and ransomware making the rounds these days are all doing the same thing: withholding your data and threatening to delete it if you do not meet their demands. Now, it would be interesting to realize that it doesnât necessarily take a hacker to destroy your data; hard drives naturally fail, and data loss occasionally occurs naturally. In fact, research shows that hard drive crashes and hardware problems are responsible for 66 percent of data loss - in essence, your hard drive is more likely to crash than you are to be hacked. Even Google is not immune : the 2015 natural disaster, in which lightning struck one of Googleâs data centers in Belgium, and wiped data from some of its disks - resulting in permanent loss of some data - quickly comes to mind. If you donât back up already, IT canât wait to tell you just how important it is to back up. More importantly, they canât wait to tell you how essential it is to back up to more than one source. 4. Bringing Your Own Device is Not As Safe as You Think it Is IT really doesnât want to infringe on your freedom or restrict you, but bringing your own device isnât exactly as safe as youâd imagine. Going back to the point we looked at earlier on about how antiviruses and password managers are not enough for securing your computer, bringing your own devices (BYOD) automatically increases the security risks of your employer. Research shows, that in organizations that have a BYOD policy, 80 percent of BYOD is completely unmanaged, and 77 percent of employees do not know the risks that come with using their own devices in the workplace. If your workplace has a good security team, your personal devices are not nearly as safe as the companyâs device. If you bring your own device, take more active measures to ensure your device is safe - better yet, reach out to someone in IT to know what you should know about accessing the company network with your device.
